A Brief Introduction to The
Medical College of Hunan Normal University
Situated on the bank of Xianjia Lake in the Yuelu District of
Changsha City, the Medical College of Hunan Normal University is an ideal place
for study with its quiet and beautiful campus. The college enjoys a long history
that can be traced to Xiang Ya Nursing School established by Dr. Hu Mei from
America in 1911. Since then the college has been developing step by step,it was
firstly named as Senior Nursing School Attached to Xiang Ya School of Medicine,
then Xiang Ya Nursing School, Hunan Nursing School, Hunan Medical School and
Hunan Medical College for Hygienic Workers and Staff Members. In March,1989, in
order to fill the margin of medical education on higher level, the school was
renamed as Hunan Medical College with the permission of the State Commission of
Education. The total area of the college proper is 554 mu, of which the area of
the campus is 121 mu, the area of Xiang Dong Hospital is 351 mu, the area of
Changsha Hospital is 40 mu, and the area of Zhang Jiajie Hospital is 42 mu. And
the total building area is 25o,ooo square meters, of which the area for teaching
is 32,000 square meters, the area of students dormitory is 34,000 square meters,
the area for clinical medicine is 48,000 square meters (with another clinical
building area of 20,000 square meters is being built). The total value of its
equipment is over 65,000,000 yuan, of which the total value of teaching
equipment is more than 17,000,000 yuan and the total value of medical equipment
is more than 41,000,000 yuan. There are 50 clinical educational bases, of which
there are three hospitals are attached to the medical college with 1410 beds and
1350 staff members, and there are 11 teaching hospital and 36 practice bases.
The college has a total of 352 teaching staff, who are not only professional but
morally excellent, of whom 16 are professors, 62 associate professors. In the
three hospitals, there are 1829 staff members with 29 professors and 107
associated professors. The college has seven specialities: clinical medicine,
preventive medicine, pharmacology, clinical laboratory, medical image, nursing
and the health of maternity and children. Authorized by Hunan Education
Commission, pharmacology and clinical laboratory are the key constructive
specialities, and biochemistry and anatomy are key subjects of the provincial
level. The college has set up seven laboratories, one educational technology
center, and five scientific research offices. The seven laboratories are medical
morphology, medical functions, chemistry, clinical medicine, clinical
laboratory, pharmacology and preventive medicine laboratory. The five scientific
research offices are: immunohisto_chemistry, parasitology, sugar compounds,
cardiovascular pharmacology and hygienic toxicology. In the recent decade, the
staff of the college has published over 1500 articles, of which more than twenty
articles are included in the International Searching System. And the college has
published 25 monographs and teaching materials. In addition, the college has
strengthened communication actively with other academic organizations and joined
26 national and provincial learning societies. The college journal has become
public academic publication with international and national publishing number.
In the library, there are 150,000 books, of which more than 110,000 digital
books and mirror image website. There are also electronic reading room, network
center, modern educational technology center and nine multi-media classrooms. In
1998, in the College Teaching Evaluation organized by the State Commission of
Education, our college is the first to have passed the qualified appraisal among
the 11 colleges in our country. In 1999, four teaching hospital passed the
Evaluation of Clinical Teaching Bases, four teaching laboratories passed the
Evaluation of Basic Laboratories. In 1999, the college is evaluated as ¡°Hunan
Provincial Civilized Higher School¡±. In 1999, our college established a training
base of postgraduate courses with Tongji Medical University. In 2000, the
college was awarded as ¡° Hunan Provincial Civilized Higher School¡± again by
Hunan Provincial Work Union of Colleges and Universities and Hunan Education
Commission. The college also has joint programs with Marshall University in West
Virginia of America, Xiang Ya School of Medicine of Center South University and
the Medical College of Nan Hua University. So far we have had both training and
undergraduate courses. In 2001, the college began its undergraduate courses with
Sheng Yang Pharmaceutical University. During the period of its 90 year¡¯s
history, the college has trained more than 20,000 qualified personnel in all. |
